The conference addressed the consequences of the conflict, including the forced displacement of Armenians and the destruction of their heritage.
During the conference, Dr Azza Karam, who serves as the founding president and CEO of Lead Integrity, spoke on the importance of multilateralism and the religious voice for protecting human rights.
A member of the UN secretary-general’s High-Level Advisory Board on Effective Multilateralism, she previously led major US- based international nongovernmental organizations, including Religions for Peace and the Women’s Learning Partnership.
In a video interview, Karam addresses how imperative it is that we hear the multilateral voice—and even more imperative that we hear the religious voice.
“Even more imperative is the multilateral action that is to be taken by different religions in service to all together,” she says, adding that “the Universal Declaration of Human Rights would not have been possible” without the religious voice at the table.
Karam also addressed the existing mechanisms through which genocide can be stopped.
“We wouldn’t have had human rights if we didn’t have religious values,” she says.
