Rev. Dr Edmond Perret, a Swiss ecumenical leader who served from 1970 to 1989 as general secretary of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC), died at the age of 87 on 24 March in Geneva, Switzerland.

While serving WARC, Perret was instrumental in exploring new possibilities for Protestant and Roman Catholic relations following the Second Vatican Council, in finding appropriate ways for world confessional communions like WARC to relate to the World Council of Churches and in encouraging Reformed and Presbyterian churches to adopt a common stand against the apartheid government of South Africa. It was during his tenure that WARC declared apartheid a “heresy”.

In 2010, WARC united with the Reformed Ecumenical Council to form today’s World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC).
