The event will take place 13–14 October, under the theme “Revisiting Nicaea: African Perspectives on Controversies and Unity of the Churches Today,” and seeks to amplify African theological voices in the global ecumenical conversation that will culminate in the Faith and Order Conference to be held from 24–28 October in Wadi El Natrun, Egypt, around the global theme “Where Now for Visible Unity?”
Key thematic focus areas
The conference will bring together theologians, church leaders, and ecumenical practitioners to explore Nicaea from diverse denominational perspectives through the following themes:
- Exploring Nicaea: Theological Discernments – One God, One Faith, and One Creed
- Bible, Hermeneutics, and Traditions: Reshaping Controversies and Unity of the Churches
- Rediscovering Nicaea: The Significance of the Nicene Creed in African Ecclesial Contexts
- Unity, Missions, and Ecumenicism of Nicaea: Council’s Decrees and the Question of One Easter Date
- Learning from Nicaea: Lessons for the African Churches and Global Christianity
Through presentations, panel discussions, and interactive sessions, participants will engage in deep theological reflection on what Nicaea means for the unity, faith, and witness of the church in Africa and beyond.
This pre-conference represents a significant opportunity for African churches to contribute to the global ecumenical dialogue, offering unique insights from their spiritual, cultural, and theological heritage.
