On 14-16 December, the Conference of European Churches and Cumberland Lodge in the UK will host an Ecumenical Conference on Human Rights with the theme “Towards Peaceful Coexistence in the Middle East: Challenges and Opportunities.”
Participants will discuss cultural and religious diversity as a source of richness. Remarks and reflections will center around religious plurality in the Middle East from both an inside and outside perspective.
Another session will cover education as a means for mutual understanding and overcoming prejudices. Participants will discuss education and peacebuilding in the West bank and in Israel.
On the second day of the conference, those gathered will discuss peaceful coexistence and citizenship, with specific country studies for challenges and opportunities in Syria and Iraq, Lebanon and Egypt.
The topic of freedom of religion or belief in the Middle East will also occupy a portion of the programme. Finally, a closing session will bring consensus on a communique from participants.
Participants will represent the World Evangelical Alliance, Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, Ecumenical Patriarchate, Evangelical Church in the Principality of Liechtenstein, Greek Orthodox Church - Antioch Patriarchate, Church of England, World Council of Churches and many others.
