The World Council of Churches (WCC) Ecumenical HIV and AIDS Initiatives and Advocacy programme, in partnership with the Council of Churches in Zambia, successfully hosted two PEPFAR-UNAIDS workshops on HIV treatment adherence from 18-20 March.

El programa de Iniciativas Ecuménicas y Acción Mundial sobre el VIH y el SIDA del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI) está organizando una consulta del 18 al 20 de marzo conjuntamente con el Consejo de Iglesias de Zambia con el objetivo de reforzar la adhesión al tratamiento del VIH.

Die Ökumenischen HIV- und AIDS-Initiativen und Advocacy des ÖRK veranstalten vom 18. bis zum 20. März gemeinsam mit dem Kirchenrat von Sambia eine Konsultation mit dem Ziel, die Therapietreue von  Personen mit HIV zu verbessern.

Du 18 au 20 mars, le programme Initiatives et plaidoyer œcuméniques pour la lutte contre le VIH et le sida du Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE) co-organise une consultation avec le Conseil des Églises de Zambie dans le but de renforcer l’observance du traitement du VIH.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) Ecumenical HIV and AIDS Initiatives and Advocacy programme is cohosting a consultation with the Council of Churches in Zambia on 18-20 March with the aim of strengthening HIV treatment adherence.

An interfaith prayer breakfast in New York City on 26 September tackled the involvement of faith leaders and faith communities, in partnerships with non-faith actors, to accelerate optimal HIV services to reach men and children, and to promote action to address issues related to sexual violence against children and HIV.

”We are here to listen. To learn what others do, so we can contextualize our understanding of HIV issues, and journey together in our work ahead. Because on HIV, we do not compete. We work together.”

„Gibt es eine Möglichkeit, Stigmatisierung und Diskriminierung innerhalb von Glaubensgemeinschaften zu thematisieren und ein Beispiel zu geben, damit die, die Leistungen für Betroffene erbringen und sie pflegen, sie nicht selbst stigmatisieren? Denn beim Thema HIV und Aids ist es egal, ob wir Christen oder Muslime, Männer oder Frauen sind. In Bezug auf HIV und Aids müssen wir als Menschen mit Menschen umgehen.“

“Is there a way we can address stigma and discrimination among faith communities, to set an example, so that those who are there to provide services, to give care, do not themselves stigmatize? Because when it comes to HIV and AIDS, it doesn’t matter if we are Christians or Muslims, women or men. With HIV and AIDS, we need to deal with it as human beings.”

¿Hay alguna forma de eliminar el estigma y la discriminación en las propias comunidades religiosas, para dar ejemplo y evitar que quienes están ahí, prestando servicios y atención sanitaria, estigmaticen a los afectados? Porque cuando hablamos de VIH y SIDA no importa si uno es cristiano, musulmán, mujer u hombre; con el VIH y el SIDA hay que tratar como seres humanos”.

«Existe-t-il un moyen d’agir contre la stigmatisation et la discrimination au sein des communautés religieuses, pour montrer l’exemple, afin que celles et ceux qui sont là pour rendre service et prodiguer des soins ne stigmatisent pas les personnes malades? Car lorsqu’il s’agit de lutter contre le VIH et le sida, peu importe que l’on soit chrétien ou musulman, femme ou homme, nous devons agir en tant qu’êtres humains.»

Zu einer von den Vereinten Nationen am 6. April in New York veranstalteten Anhörung der Zivilgesellschaft haben Organisationen mit religiösem Hintergrund einen wesentlichen inhaltlichen Beitrag geleistet. Die Anhörung ist Teil der Vorbereitungen auf die UN-Tagung auf hoher Ebene über HIV/AIDS, die vom 8. bis 10. Juni ebenfalls in New York stattfindet.

Faith-based organizations presented significant input at a 6 April United Nations civil society hearing in New York City, a prelude to a UN High Level Meeting on HIV in New York on 8-10 June.

Varias organizaciones religiosas presentaron importantes aportaciones en la audiencia de la sociedad civil que tuvo lugar el 6 de abril en Nueva York, como antesala a la Reunión de Alto Nivel de las Naciones Unidas sobre el VIH/SIDA que se celebrará del 8 al 10 de junio también en Nueva York.

Le 6 avril, à New York, des organisations d’inspiration religieuse ont apporté une contribution importante à l’occasion d’une séance des Nations Unies avec des représentantes et représentants de la société civile, qui préludait à une réunion de haut niveau consacrée au VIH.

In Africa, where up to 40 percent of the health care facilities are provided by faith based organizations, Dr Mirfin Mpundu, executive director of the Ecumenical Pharmaceutical Network, says that due to their unique position churches can play a special role in eliminating HIV and AIDS and bringing improvements in the lives of people living with the virus.

Women from churches across Africa have gathered in Kenya to focus on the achievements, challenges and opportunities of women's ministry in African churches over the past 30 years, as well as their responses to the HIV and AIDS pandemic.

Churches need to be inspired by the biblical verse Luke 9.2: “He sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and heal the sick.” With this inspiration only those who can make healthy communities possible can translate their preaching into visible actions.
