Weekend of Prayer and Action Against Hunger
The world faces a severe hunger crisis fueled by conflict, climate change, and rising living costs. Children and families in vulnerable situations are bearing the brunt of this crisis. According to the Global Report on Food Crises, nearly 282 million people across 59 countries and territories suffered from high levels of acute hunger in 2023—an increase of 24 million from the previous year.
"The scale of this hunger crisis is heartbreaking, yet we believe that faith communities can be a powerful force in addressing it. Through prayer and concrete action, we can help lift the yoke of hunger from millions of shoulders," said Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay, WCC general secretary.
In response, churches worldwide are coming together for the third annual Weekend of Prayer and Action Against Hunger, which will take place 11-13 October and coincide with World Food Day. This weekend mobilizes congregations globally to fight hunger and injustice through prayer, worship, and community-driven action.
On 11 October, an in-person event hosted by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Geneva, entitled "Until All Are Fed,” will take place. This event is co-organized by the WCC, ACT Alliance, Evangelical Lutheran Church of Geneva, Lutheran World Federation, World Evangelical Alliance, World Methodist Council, and World Vision.
Pillay will be one of the keynote speakers, addressing the importance of faith communities responding to the global hunger crisis.
The initiative will offer updated information, liturgies, and action-oriented resources in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. These resources inspire reflection and encourage meaningful actions to combat hunger, uniting faith communities in solidarity.
If you are in Geneva, do plan to attend. For more information on how to participate and to register, visit Weekend of Prayer.
