"The Pan African Journey: Lessons of Transformation and Strategy"
The event will take place on 15 April at the WCC Ecumenical Centre in Geneva, alongside the fifth session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on People of African Descent.
Held during a pivotal moment in global human rights discourse, this hybrid event will bring together scholars, faith leaders, policymakers, and advocates to reflect on the enduring legacy of pan-African resistance and chart strategies for justice, equity, and transformation. The discussion aligns with the broader theme of the forum: expanding the human rights of people of African descent during the Second International Decade for People of African Descent.
The timing of the event is especially significant. It follows key global milestones, including the 60th anniversary of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, the 25th anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, and the fifth anniversary of the Permanent Forum itself. These milestones highlight both progress made and the persistent challenges faced by people of African descent worldwide, who continue to encounter systemic racism, discrimination, and structural inequalities.
Building on this context, the event will examine the historical and contemporary dimensions of pan-African resistance movements.
Key discussions will focus on reclaiming the heritage of pan-African resistance, assessing achievements and gaps 25 years after the Durban Declaration, and exploring the concept of reparatory justice beyond financial compensation. The role of youth of African descent will also be highlighted as central to sustaining de-colonial movements and shaping future strategies.
