With the topics of the war in Ukraine and climate protection as the focal points, the 38th German Protestant Kirchentag takes place in Nuremberg, Germany from 7 to 11 June. The World Council of Churches’ presence in the Kirchentag’s exhibition space “Market of Opportunities” (hall 9, stand 9-C32) enables lively encounters and an opportunity to learn more about the ecumenical movement.

World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay served as a keynote speaker at the Ninth Conference for Research in Diakonia and Christian Social Practice, hosted by the International Society for the Research and Study of Diakonia and Christian Social Practice and VID Specialized University. The theme of the conference was “Contested Spaces of Diaconia – Seeking Justice, Safety and Well-Being.”

Durante la visita de la delegación de dirigentes del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI) a Ucrania que tuvo lugar en mayo se celebró un servicio ecuménico de oración en Bucha, a las afueras de Kiev, el 12 de mayo. El servicio, oficiado por los dirigentes del CMI, con la participación del secretario general del CMI, Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay; el moderador del Comité Central del CMI, el obispo Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, y el arzobispo Vicken Aykazian, así como de miembros del Consejo Ucraniano de Iglesias y Organizaciones Religiosas (UCCRO), tuvo lugar en la Iglesia ortodoxa de San Andrés de Bucha.

During the World Council of Churches (WCC) leadership delegation visit to Ukraine in May, an ecumenical prayer service was held in Bucha, on the outskirts of Kyiv, on 12 May. The service, led by the WCC leadership, WCC general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay, WCC moderator Bishop Heinrich Bedford-Strohm and Archbishop Vicken Aykazian, with participation of members of the Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (UCCRO), took place at St Andrew Orthodox Church in Bucha.

Al cumplirse un año del fallecimiento del metropolitano Gennadios de Sassima, exvicemoderador del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias (CMI), el CMI emitió un mensaje conmemorativo durante un servicio celebrado el 28 de mayo en el monasterio de Timios Prodromos, Akritochori, (Grecia).

The World Council of Churches (WCC) delivered a memorial message at a service held 28 May at the Monastery of Timios Prodromos, Akritochori, Greece, marking one year since the death of Metropolitan Gennadios of Sassima, former WCC vice moderator.

World Council of Churches central committee moderator Bishop Dr Heinrich Bedford-Strohm delivered a lecture at the Kitzingen deanery, a regional church district near Würzburg, for the parishes of the deanery as well as for the public. El moderador del Comité Central del Consejo Mundial de Iglesias, el obispo Dr. Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, ofreció el 29 de abril la conferencia titulada “¿Paz justa mediante la fuerza militar? Consideraciones éticas de la pacificación ante la guerra de agresión contra Ucrania” en el decanato de Kitzingen, distrito eclesiástico regional cercano a Würzburg, para las parroquias locales y el público general.

On 17 May 2023 in Moscow, a WCC delegation consisting of general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay, director for International Affairs Mr Peter Prove, and programme executive for Ecumenical Relations and Faith and Order Dr Vasile-Octavian Mihoc met with His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Against the background of the Russian invasion and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, a high-level WCC leadership delegation visiting Ukraine undertook an intensive series of consultations in Kyiv on 11 May 2023, with church leaders, Ukrainian government officials, and others.
