Liberating Lutheran Theology: Freedom for Justice and Solidarity with Others in a Global Context

The prophetic potential of global Christianity— Spanning the continents, three internationally respected theologians here demonstrate how the thought and legacy of Martin Luther can serve in an ecumenical and interfaith context as a resource for a radical yet helpful critique of global economics and contemporary culture.

Paul Chung, Ulrich Duchrow, and Craig L. Nessan

Foreword by Karen L. Bloomquist

What does Reformation Christianity have to say to today’s global church?

Spanning the continents, three internationally respected theologians here demonstrate how the thought and legacy of Martin Luther can serve in an ecumenical and interfaith context as a resource for a radical yet helpful critique of global economics and contemporary culture.

Lutheran Christianity originated in its own era of economic and cultural crisis. Yet it is often seen as reactionary, seeking to preserve the political status quo. Countering that stereotype, this book wields Luther’s theology to engage fully the global realities of poverty, hunger, oppression,  ecological degradation, and an imperial capitalism as the most urgent ecumenical theological issue in the contemporary world. The volume demonstrates the prophetic potential of theology done out of a biblical and Reformation Christian perspective—a liberating word for a hurting world.

“New challenges are being encountered and new voices are on the horizon of world Lutheran Christianity. The new work by Paul Chung, Ulrich Duchrow, and Craig Nessan is the most comprehensive treatise to date for addressing these new challenges and heralding the new setting. The three authors, coming from different continents, are noted Lutheran academicians with global experience and expertise in the dialogue with other faiths, on ecumenism, and on the effects of the current economic reality worldwide.… An invaluable resource.”
