Dear brothers and sisters in the Solomon Islands, Fiji, Vanuatu and Tonga and the Pacific,

Deepest and sympathetic greetings from the World Council of Churches.

It is with great sadness that we hear of the devastation and loss of life caused by Tropical Cyclone Harold on the Solomon Islands, Fiji, Vanuatu and Tonga this week. We are mindful of the extra burden that this presents for the people of the Solomon Islands, Fiji, Vanuatu and Tonga this  amid the pressures of addressing the COVID-19 pandemic.

You have especially been in our communal prayers this week. We are also ever mindful that the Pacific is the WCC regional focus for this year and that due to the current pandemic, some of our planned programs and visits have either had to be deferred or cancelled. Please be assured of our continuing support for you in the common concerns that we share.

At this time we hold fast to our faith in God through Christ, who through the Holy Spirit reminds us that God continues to be at work. May the lessons of Holy Week be a continuing inspiration to us as we continue to work faithfully with wisdom, discernment and compassion for our communities at this present time for Christ’s sake. Finally, may the hope of Easter and Christ’s resurrection be our continuing strength for us all in this strange and uncertain time.

We continue to stand with you in solidarity and prayer.

Faithfully in Christ,

Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca
