The Ecumenical School on Governance, Economics and Management (GEM) for an Economy of Life aims to train church leaders and young persons on eco-just international economics and global economic governance, thereby equipping churches with tools to enable them to engage in advocacy for transformations in the financial and economic architecture.
A. Basic Guidelines
The application form should be used to apply for the GEM School for an Economy of Life only. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have followed the instructions in these guidelines.
Please type or write clearly on the application form. The details you give in your application form will be used in the administration of your application, and potentially as the basis of your participant record. If the form is incorrectly completed your application may be delayed and may not be processed.
Your surname/family name is used to identify and match all materials sent with your application and for dealing with enquiries. Please use only the full name given in your passport and identity documents.
You are expected to have sufficient working knowledge of English since it will be the language of the course.
You are advised to apply well in advance of the closing date for applications. The completed application form must be accompanied by all the supporting materials listed in Section B.
The school will train church leaders (i.e. those who are in relevant negotiations or being sent as representatives to public policy discussions) and young activists (up to the age of 30) in a maximum group of 18.
The nomination criteria include: MA or BA preferably in theology, economics/finance/business management or any social science or demonstration of competence in the aforementioned fields by engagement in issues of socio-economic and ecological justice; five years of leadership experience (except for youth until the age of 30); sound insights into practices of public policy and passion for justice (assessed through an essay); and endorsement from a church or ecumenical organization. After meeting the nomination criteria, participants will be selected with a view to achieving regional, gender and denominational balance.
Selected participants are granted full scholarship, including flights, accommodation and full board. However, a minimum contribution of US$100 is expected from each participant or from the endorsing church/organization. This amount must be paid before or at the beginning of the school.
Selected participants must agree to attend the full 2-week programme.
B. Application and Supporting Materials
All applicants are required to submit the following documents:
- Completed application form with passport-size photograph
- Essay in English (1-2 pages) responding to the following questions: (a) Why do you think issues of economic justice and theological reflection on the role of economics in society are important, and where do you see the challenges for churches? (b) What forms of public engagement in economic justice have you lead or experienced and what projects do you intend to pursue in the future? (c) Why is the GEM School for an Economy of Life relevant for you?
- Copy of passport ID page
- Endorsement letter from a church or ecumenical organization
- Curriculum vitae or resume (1-2 pages) listing academic and/or professional experience
