Dear President Carter,

We are delighted to congratulate you for being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize this year.  The honor is well-deserved.  For decades you have worked to advance the cause of human rights, to bring about an end to suffering, and to work for the peaceful resolution of conflicts.  In your capacity as US President, you were instrumental in making the issue of human rights an integral part of US foreign policy and placing it squarely on the international agenda.  The Carter Center, which celebrates its twentieth anniversary this year, has become a widely recognized instrument for improving the lives of people throughout the world.  We commend you for your steadfast efforts to translate your Christian faith into concrete actions to bring about peace and justice in this troubled world.

At a time when the US government seems to be moving towards war, we are particularly appreciative of your efforts to speak out against the threat of another war against Iraq.  We hope that you will continue to use your position to advocate for the peaceful resolution of all conflicts and for the strengthening of multilateral institutions to respond to global needs.

                                                                                         Yours in Christ,

                                                                                                                  Konrad Raiser
