Letter to Ambassador Kevin Edward Moley, Permanent Mission of the USA to the UN in Geneva, 19 September 2002.

Your Excellency,

I write to you in my new capacity as Director of the Commission of the Churches on International Affairs (CCIA) following Rev. Dwain Epps's leaving this same position after some three decades of ecumenical ministry in the field of international affairs - twenty years of which on the staff of the CCIA. I am very much looking forward to our future cooperation in addressing the challenges that confront the world at the international level. I am a layman - a trained journalist - from theChurch of Sweden and have up to now been Director for the international work of my church.

The Central Committee of the World Council of Churches, meeting in Geneva in early September 2002, adopted a statement on "the threats of military action against IraqI which expresses "concern and alarm about the efforts of the US government to gather international support for a new military action against Iraq."

The Central Committee also adopted a minute on the tragedy of September 11th 2001 and the implications of the US government's response. I am attaching copies of both of these statements and ask that you forward them to the appropriate officials in your government.

We earnestly hope that the dangers of military action in an already-troubled region can be averted. We assure you of our highest consideration and our support and prayers for efforts for peace.

Respectfully yours,

Peter Weiderud
Director
Commission of the Churches on
International Affairs
