21 June 2012

A visit from the Ecumenical Patriarch, planning for the upcoming World Council of Churches (WCC) 10th Assembly, in Busan, Republic of Korea, discussions around WCC governance and programme reporting will all be at the centre of the WCC Central Committee meetings, 28 August – 5 September in Kolympari, Crete, Greece.

The Central Committee is the governing body of the WCC elected at each Assembly and meets every 18 months.

The meeting is being hosted by the Ecumenical Patriarch, His Holiness Bartholomew I, and will be held at the Orthodox Academy of Crete, Kolympari.

The Ecumenical Patriarch will attend the Central Committee meetings at the academy on the evening of Monday 3 September.

This will be the final meeting of this Central Committee which was elected at the WCC 9th Assembly held in February 2006 in Porto Allegro, Brazil.  A new Central Committee will be elected during the 10th Assembly, which is to be held in Busan, Republic of Korea, 30 October to 8 November 2013.

The theme of the upcoming 10th Assembly is “God of life, lead us to justice and peace.”

The Central Committee will also be examining a “Unity Statement” that will go to the Assembly as a key document focusing on church unity.

The Central Committee will review a statement on mission and evangelism which was prepared in February by the Commission on World Mission and Evangelism at a pre-assembly gathering in Manila, Philippines.

Press conferences will be held throughout the week, including press conferences with the WCC general secretary, Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, and the moderator of the Central Committee, the Rev.
