The World Council of Churches (WCC) will remember the life and work of Rev. Prof. Dr Mary-Anne Plaatjies van Huffel with an online memorial service on 4 June at 4pm CET.

Plaatjies van Huffel, known as a transformative church leader in sub-Saharan Africa, passed away on 19 May. The South African pastor and academic had been serving as the WCC president from Africa since 2013.

WCC members of governance and staff will lead and participate in prayer, music and a memorial liturgy. WCC moderator Dr Agnes Abuom will offer a memorial message, and WCC presidents and staff will present many tributes to Plaatjies van Huffel.

A reflection will be offered by Prof. Musa Dube, general coordinator of the Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians. Family members, including Plaatjies-van Huffel’s sister and her husband, will also participate in the service by leading prayers and reflections.
