In a reflection offered for World Water Day, observed 22 March, the World Council of Churches (WCC) reflects on the importance of hand-washing in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Basic hand-washing is not available to millions of people, particularly to children, because they do not have adequate access to safe and clean water for drinking, let alone for hand-washing.
“Can you imagine how challenging hand-washing is without a tap at home or school?”, the reflection asks. “But that is the reality for millions of children around the world.”
Written by Dinesh Suna, coordinator of the WCC Ecumenical Water Network (WCC-EWN), the reflection also explores water and climate change, and the importance of managing climate and water in a more coordinated and sustainable manner. In the Pacific Island nations, hundreds of villages are being relocated due to the impact of climate change through rising sea levels. “People lost their land and the memories of generations along with it,” the reflection notes.
The reflection is part of the WCC’s Seven Weeks for Water Lenten campaign produced by the WCC-EWN.
