Upon the death of Rev. Dr Edwin Mulder, a major figure in global Protestantism in the 20th century, World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit expressed both condolences and gratitude in a letter to Mulder’s family.

“He was a true servant of Christ and a humble leader in the ecumenical moment,” wrote Tveit.

Mulder served as president of the General Synod of the Reformed Church of America, as well as on the WCC Central Committee. He was also commended for his commitment to the struggle against apartheid in South Africa.

“In the North American churches, he will also be remembered for his work for women’s ordination, his advocacy for a nuclear-free world and his support for the full inclusion of sexual minorities,” wrote Tveit. “In the ecumenical community in Geneva as well as around the world Ed will be remembered with great fondness.”
