The World Council of Churches (WCC) invites ecumenical youth to be stewards at the 2020 Central Committee in Geneva, Switzerland.
With an application deadline of 1 December 2019, the Stewards Programme aims to bring together a dynamic and diverse group of 20 young people from all over the world on 12-25 March 2020. The invitation is open to people from a variety of backgrounds, churches and regions.
Former WCC stewards described the rewards they reaped from working hard, collaborating as a team, and putting in long hours to learn about how they are all connected through the ecumenical movement.
Isak Mikael Emanuel Sandell, from Sweden, said that serving as a steward helped him grow in faith and in his understanding of the ecumenical movement. “Now I have a better perspective,” he said. “It is one of the greatest parts of my life. I felt something missing when I went home.”
Renato Miranda Valenga, from Brazil, felt a sense of community and belongingness while being a steward. “The Stewards Programme opened opportunities for me to take bigger roles in our church back in Brazil,” said Valenga. “Now, I am serving as a country representative for young people in the Evangelical Church of the Lutheran Confession in Brazil.”
Stewards are young people between the ages 18 and 30 years old. English is the working language of the programme, and key attributes of stewards are patience and the ability to work with people from other countries and cultures as a team.
