Expressing solidarity with Sri Lankan churches trying to "put an end to confrontational politics that have already done so much damage to the country”, World Council of Churches general secretary Rev. Dr Konrad Raiser has today sent a letter to WCC member churches and the national council of churches in Sri Lanka. He assures them of the WCC's “continuing prayers and support” for their “work for peace and reconciliation”, and expresses concern for the current political crisis that is putting the fragile peace process into peril. “It is important that the cease-fire agreement reached between the government and the LTTE in February 2002 holds, and that there is no resumption of hostilities,” Raiser emphasizes. He hopes that the president and the prime minister will resolve their differences in order to “together work for peace and reconciliation and for the well-being of the people”.
