The Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, general secretary of the World Council of Churches, has congratulated the two children's rights activists who won this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.

Said Tveit, “In the last few years we have witnessed the bold and brave activities of youth for freedom, education, and justice. Awarding this prize to Malala Yousafzai and Kailash Satyarthi not only affirms their work but also rebukes the extremists and bigots who would rob their humanity. Their efforts show how justice and peace belong together and can be addressed together.”

The prize, announced 10 October in Oslo, Norway, was awarded to Pakistani child education activist Malala Yousafzai and Indian child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi "for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people," said the Nobel committee.
