The future of theological education in Asia was addressed during a meeting of the Foundation for Theological Education in South East Asia (FTESEA) in the US city of Philadelphia, 4-5 October 2010. The FTESEA is preparing to celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2012 and is looking back to years of creative partnership with both the World Council of Churches (WCC) programme on Ecumenical Theological Education (ETE) and the Ecumenical Institute in Bossey, Switzerland.

One session of the meeting centred on a public lecture by Dr Dietrich Werner, the WCC’s international coordinator for ETE. The presentation took place during a convocation in Philadelphia’s Lutheran Theological Seminary.

Werner highlighted urgent needs for more international cooperation in promoting ecumenical theological education in world Christianity and evaluated the Edinburgh 2010 process and its implications for theological education. He also identified areas that are crucial for joint action by mission boards, ecumenical partners and commissions on theological education.

Among other speakers featured at the consultation were Dr Chen Yilu and Dr Lin Mahong of the Nanjing Theological Seminary in China and Dr Limuel Equina of the Association of Theological Education in South East Asia.
