A Peace Convocation commemorating 70 years since the start of the Korean War will be held on 20 June at the White Horse Memorial in Cholwon, South Korea.

Rev. Dr Jaecheon Lee, general secretary of the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea, explained that the White Horse Hill Memorial is located on the most ferocious battlefield of the Korean War.

“Here we pray that God may hear the cry of the victims’ blood from the ground and grant them peace,” said Lee. “The Korea War caused immense sacrifices but did not come to an end.”

In spite of the 70 years that have passed, the wounds of the war haven’t been healed, Lee continued. “The people of the North and South are suffering from the aftermath of the war and still continuing the hostile confrontation,” he said.

The Korean War was a global war, he noted. “The Korean War was not a civil war merely between Koreans,” he said. “The peaceful coexistence of North and South Korea has become the key to global peace.”

The church, he said, is God’s instrument for peace. “The church has not been able to overcome its self-consciousness of being a victim of the war and rather contributed to amplify the wounds of the war,” said Lee. “We pray for God’s grace that we may be strengthened to reflect our path of the past and heal our wounds of the war.”
