Metopolitan Chrysostomos of Ephesus (1921-2006)

16 October 2006

Learning of the death on Friday 13 October of Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Ephesus, WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia pays tribute to the former WCC president and senior representative of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in a tribute addressed to the ecumenical patriarch, Bartholomew I.

Metropolitan Chrysostomos, says Kobia, will be remembered as "an outstanding leader and a pioneer in inter-Christian dialogue and in the articulation of an authentic and creative Orthodox contribution to the ecumenical movement," for his "theological gifts" as well as his "sensitivity to pastoral concerns" and, in the WCC context, for his "spiritual integrity and theological rigour" as co-chairman of the Special Commission on Orthodox participation in the WCC.
