An HIV Interfaith Conference, ”Resilience & Renewal: faith in the HIV response,” will take place virtually on 22-24 September.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) is part of a consortium of organisations from several faith traditions and people living with HIV from around the world organising the gathering, with the support of the UNAIDS-PEPFAR Faith Initiative. The conference will provide a space for sharing, learning and advocacy among people of faith involved in the HIV and AIDS response.

Resiliency and renewal are both important concepts in addressing the ongoing challenges, explained Rev. Dr Nyambura Njoroge, programme executive for the WCC Ecumenical HIV and AIDS Initiative and Advocacy, and Dr Manoj Kurian, coordinator of the WCC Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance.

Njoroge said: "People of faith and the consistent collaborative partnerships and services provided by faith-based institutions have actively contributed to the resilience of people living with HIV to live and strive through the HIV pandemic over the last four decades. Let us celebrate, share and get inspired by the many resilient people of faith, engaged in the HIV response."

Kurian added: "Our faith in God and the dedication of faith communities to overcome HIV, amid new pandemics and myriad challenges, are crucial for the renewal of our efforts to overcome HIV over the next decade."

Conference participants will also identify joint actions to address some of the challenges and emerging issues related to the achievements of the 2020 and 2030 HIV-related targets.
