Global faith leaders, including World Council of Churches general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, are inviting people to join a “Season of Creation”from 1 September to 4 October, during which they set aside time to deepen their relationship with God, each other, and all of creation.

The Season of Creation began in 1989 with the first recognition of a day of prayer for creation by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of the Orthodox Church. The special observance is now embraced by the wider ecumenical family.

“During the Season of Creation, we join together to rejoice in the good gift of creation and reflect on how we care for it,”the letter of invitation reads. “This season offers a precious opportunity to pause in the midst of our day-to-day lives and contemplate the fabric of life into which we are woven.”

The letter, as well as accompanying materials, offer ways to contemplate the ties between care for the earth and justice. The letter queries: “Are there ways to deepen our faith by protecting ‘the least of these,’who are most vulnerable to the consequences of environmental degradation?”

The letter also invites people to join together on a journey of faith that will bring a fresh perspective and deeper bonds of love. “During this season, we walk together towards greater stewardship of our place in creation,”the faith leaders reflect.
