Bishop Brian Farrell has been a key figure on the ecumenical scene since his appointment as secretary of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity in 2002.
Over that time he has attended most of the major events in the life of the WCC, including the last assembly in South Korea and the recent Conference on World Mission and Evangelism in Tanzania.
Ahead of the papal visit to Geneva, Bishop Farrell reflects on the “shift in pace and style to our whole ecumenical commitment” that has taken place under Pope Francis.
He also talks about last month’s meeting of the Joint Working Group between the Roman Catholic Church and the WCC in Romania, which focused on practical collaboration in two key areas of peacemaking and supporting migrants and refugees.
Bishop Farrell says the pope’s visit will “strengthen the already strong relationship” between the Catholic Church and the WCC, shedding light on the ongoing ways in which many offices of the Holy See are collaborating with programmes of the WCC.
