From 18-20 September, the World Council of Churches (WCC) is hosting in Buenos Aires, Argentina, a regional meeting of some 30 people with responsibilities for ecumenical relations in several churches in the region of Latin America and the Caribbean. It is the first regional meeting of this kind, following the dynamics of global meetings of the Ecumenical Officers Network, which meets every two years at the WCC headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

“The main purpose of this meeting is to enlarge and consolidate the network of WCC ecumenical officers in Latin America and the Caribbean, as WCC’s focus for this year is on these regions”, said Rev. Dr Daniel Buda, WCC coordinator of church and ecumenical relations.

Speaking on the program that includes praying together, sharing ideas, and visiting local churches and communities, Buda said that “the spirit of unity and fellowship is strong in this meeting and the organizing team is confident that the goal of the meeting shall be reached”, he added.

The core of the agenda comes from the WCC’s “Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace” as the inspiration for learning, reflective study and discussion on current developments in the ecumenical movement.

The Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace is a call to the ecumenical movement which emerged from the WCC Busan assembly in late 2013. During the meeting, the group is devoting significant time to exploring the pilgrimage and sharing experiences from their own home churches.

The agenda also covers numerous themes that provide a focus in the programme areas of the WCC, among them the 2018 regional focus of the pilgrimage on Latin America and the Caribbean, the preparations for the 11th Assembly of the WCC in 2021.
