Under the title "Cultures and religions for all ages" around 150 persons gathered yesterday at the Ecumenical Centre in Geneva to celebrate the UN International Day of Older Persons.

The list of topics addressed by the speakers from various religions, including Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism, Christianity, Islam and Bahaism, ranged from "the changing demographics" to "how older persons' health can be improved through community based initiatives in rural India".

Arvind Kasthuri, professor at St-John's Medical College, Bangalore, India, and expert on ageing, says that young people "should be sensitized to the fact that there is going to be a large number of older people and a growing number to take care of". Listen to his explanations.

The event was organized by the Geneva International Network on Ageing (GINA), the NGO Committee on Ageing at the United Nations in Geneva, the World Council of Churches, the Geneva Spiritual Appeal and the City of Geneva.
