This public event presents the new WCC publication Emilio Castro: A Legacy of Passionate Ecumenism, a biography of the first Latin American to serve as the fellowship’s general secretary.

A fervent believer in the power of the spoken word, Emilio Castro used his oratorical abilities to call for social change and ecumenical engagement throughout a career that took him from his native Uruguay to the halls of world power. Based on an extensive series of interviews in 2006, the biography includes Castro’s own vivid re-telling of many of those moments.

The event, which is being hosted by current WCC general secretary, Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, features book authors Carlos A. Sintado and Manuel Quintero Pérez, and translator Tony Coates.

The launch program includes a presentation by the well-known ecumenist, Wesley Ariarajah, and comments by Coates about translating the book from the original Spanish, in a discussion moderated by Kristine Greenaway, coordinator WCC Publications.

The authors and the translator are available to sign copies of the book.
