It could be confidently said that, for the past 25 years, scholarly contribution towards the discourse has been adequately covered and addressed. This said, the question should be raised: how did we progress on the praxis side? If the lived experience of people living with disabilities is still that of exclusion and marginalisation, then the theoretical discourse raised awareness but maybe it did not have that much of an impact on the praxis.
The outcome of the next 25 years of work within EDAN should impact the lived experience of people living with disabilities. As the sub-themes are identified, a way forward will be to endlessly raise the question: how will this aspect impact the lived experience of people living with a disability?
Reflecting on the theme of EDAN at 25: "Making a Way," we can explore various sub-themes that highlight different aspects of paving paths toward a better lived experience, more inclusive church, and broader society.
The next 25 years cannot create tolerance in our churches and broader communities where references are made such as “we will tolerate them.” For the next 25 years, we need to help churches and the broader community to accept people living with disabilities as members who belong and who are part of “us”—not a group referred to as “them.”
Each sub-theme emphasizes a distinct area where efforts are needed to create opportunities to improve the lived experience and ensure fairness, inclusiveness, and belonging for all individuals.
Way to justice through advocacy
Advocacy plays a crucial role in achieving justice. It involves actively supporting and campaigning for the rights of marginalized communities. Through advocacy, individuals and groups can bring attention to injustices, influence public policy, and drive social change which in turn will create a different lived experience. Advocates work tirelessly to ensure that laws and regulations are just and that those in power are held accountable. This pathway is essential for addressing systemic inequalities and ensuring that every person has an equal opportunity to thrive.
Way for access(ibility)
Accessibility is fundamental to creating an inclusive society where my lived experience is positive, and I can thrive. This sub-theme focuses on removing barriers that prevent individuals with disabilities from fully participating in all aspects of life. It involves designing environments, products, and services that are usable by everyone, regardless of their abilities. Ensuring accessibility means implementing universal design principles, providing accommodations, and promoting an inclusive culture that values diversity. By making spaces and opportunities accessible, we empower all individuals to contribute and succeed.
Way of belonging
Belonging is a deep, emotional need that drives our connection to communities and societies. This sub-theme emphasizes creating environments where individuals feel accepted, valued, and included. A sense of belonging is fostered through inclusive practices, supportive relationships, and community engagement. It involves recognizing and celebrating differences, promoting empathy, and building a culture of respect and understanding. When people feel they belong, they are more likely to engage positively and contribute meaningfully to society.
Way for inclusion
Inclusion goes beyond mere tolerance of diversity; it is about actively accepting and involving everyone in all aspects of society. This sub-theme highlights the importance of creating systems and practices that ensure everyone, regardless of their background, identity, or ability, can participate fully. Inclusion requires intentional efforts to address biases, provide equitable opportunities, and support diverse perspectives. It involves creating policies and practices that promote fairness and equal opportunity, ensuring that every voice is heard and valued.
Conclusion
"Making a Way" is about creating pathways that lead to a more just, accessible, and inclusive society on the one hand and a lived experience that is positive for flourishing. Each sub-theme underscores the importance of specific actions and attitudes that contribute to this overarching goal. Whether through advocacy, enhancing accessibility, fostering belonging, or promoting inclusion, the collective effort to make a way forward is essential for building a world where everyone can flourish.
