Bishop Mark MacDonald was elected as the World Council of Churches president for North America at the WCC 10th Assembly in 2013. He assumed office as the Anglican Church of Canada's first National Indigenous Anglican Bishop after serving for about 10 years as bishop of the U.S. Episcopal Diocese of Alaska where he was consecrated bishop on 13 September 1997.

He has had a long and varied ministry, holding positions in Mississauga, Ontario, Duluth, Minnesota; Tomah and Mauston, Wisconsin; Portland, Oregon; and the southeast regional mission of the Diocese of Navajoland. Immediately prior to his ordination to the episcopate, Bishop MacDonald was canon missioner for training in the Diocese of Minnesota and vicar of St. Antipas' Church, Redby, and St John-in-the-Wilderness Church, Red Lake, Red Lake Nation.

He is the author, co-author and co-editor of several publications.
