African women theologians address children issues

Orphans and vulnerable children are one focus of the 4th Pan African Conference hosted by the Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians in Yaoundé, Cameroon, from 3-8 September 2007. Topics include sexual abuse, child-headed households, the role of faith based organizations in child care, and many more.

The Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians engages African women from the continent and the diaspora in a theological dialogue. Its more then 600 members belong to African indigenous religions, Christianity, Islam and Judaism.

The 4th Pan African Conference has, for the first time, created a platform for dialogue between its participants and some influential male theologians. The participation of the latter was facilitated by the WCC, which, as WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia writes in his message to the conference, “aims to assist in the liberation of masculinity in dealing with critical issues of today - such as AIDS and violence against women and children.” The WCC also contributes to the conference programmatically and by bringing in experts from various parts of Sub-Saharan Africa.
