Women as Peacemakers: Christian-Muslim women workshop

Christian and Muslim women are peacemakers in many ways. Both separately and also together in groups throughout the world, they address the absence of true peace on a global level, in society and in the community of women and men. A 4-7 September meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden aims to take the existing dialogue between Christian and Muslim women one step further.

The co-organizers - namely the World Council of Churches (WCC), the the Institute for Interreligious Dialogue (IID) in Teheran, Iran and the Diocese of Gothenburg - invite women to wrestle, in critical solidarity with tradition, on issues pertinent to a just society of women and men. In order to ensure a constructive role of religion in our societies, the role of women is put up for discussion.

Some twenty women from the WCC constituency and from Iran, with diverse backgrounds including the arts, media, education and theology, are expected. The meeting continues a process which began with a meeting in Teheran in November 2007.

The dialogue process on the role of women in “Moving towards peace through religion” is being organized by the WCC programme on inter-religious dialogue and cooperation in collaboration with the Iranian non-governmental organization IID. It also contributes to the Decade to Overcome Violence 2001-2010, a WCC initiative that promotes peace and non-violent ways of living together.

The September meeting is hosted by the Church of Sweden, Diocese of Gothenburg.
