The EWN Summer School on Water 2008
From 27 July to 5 August 2008, 22 young Christians from 18 countries and 6 continents met at the Ecumenical Institute in Bossey, Switzerland for eight days of intense learning about water issues.
Experts such as Anton Earle from the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) presented a broad overview over the water crisis and possible responses, challenging participants to sometimes change perspective.
Presentations and exhibitions on water issues in their respective home countries were also prepared by the participants themselves.
Shaun Cozett, deputy director at South Africa's National Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, was one of the 22 participants. He presented how water management and law had changed in South Africa since 1994.
A visit to the city of Geneva: drinking water is flowing freely from many fountains in the city. Participants noted that in just a few minutes more water flowed from this public tap then what a person needs daily to lead a healthy life.
Water in abundance in some places, drought, inequality, and poverty in others. What can Christians do to make access to water a reality for everybody?
Answers to this question were not only discussed with water experts but also in bible study and theological reflection.
Advocacy, education, awareness raising: Kelly Forbush explains follow-up ideas by students, ranging from theatre in streets and supermarkets, through reflection in the liturgical calendar of their congregations, to political advocacy.
