The Ecumenical Water Network is an initiative of Christian churches, organizations, and movements who have joined hands
- to protect and realize people’s access to water around the world
- making a common Christian witness be heard in the debate on water issues
- promoting community-based initiatives and solutions to overcome the water crisis
- protecting water as a gift of God and advocating for water as a human right at the local, regional, and international level
The 2006 Porto Alegre Assembly has given its support to the Ecumenical Water Network (EWN) and provided a policy framework through the statement on Water for Life. The current water crisis and the multi-dimensional challenges it poses for the future were recognized by the Assembly. As of 2007, the WCC offers a home for the EWN Secretariat and helps to facilitate co-operation and common action among the partners involved in building on the experience of successful co-operation and following-up on consultations in Kenya and Brazil in 2005/2006.
