God is our refuge and strength. An ever present help in times of trouble. (Psalm 46:1)

Greetings from the World Council of Churches (WCC), on behalf of its 350 member churches in more than 110 countries, representing over 560 million Christians around the world. I come before you with our hearts filled with grief as we see the devastation caused by the flooding and landslides in your country.

On Wednesday 3 May 2023 over 130 people are reported to have died, with many more missing, houses destroyed and roads cut off after torrential rain caused flooding and landslides in western and northern provinces of Rwanda. This incidence occurs amid existing economic and security challenges within and outside Rwanda due to global instability. I convey our solidarity and support to the churches and people of Rwanda for the grace to overcome these difficult challenges.

As people of faith, we are called to stand together in solidarity with one another, upholding each other in prayers, supporting those who are made vulnerable socially and economically, the displaced persons, and those who have lost their means of livelihood due to crisis and disaster.

I pray that your presence would be felt by those who are grieving, who are injured, who have lost their homes and livelihoods. Also, pray for wisdom and safety for those who are responding to the people in need and the many challenges left in the wake of the event. May you experience the presence and the love of God—our refuge, strength, and ever-present help in times of trouble. Amen!
