Linking poverty, wealth and ecology: North-American perspectives

This consultation is part of a WCC study project on Poverty, wealth and ecological debt. It continues a process which was started at the WCC 8th Assembly in Harare in 1998 and became known as Alternative Globalization Addressing People and Earth (AGAPE) since the 9th Assembly in Porto Alegre. Today, the issue of socio-economic justice is no less pressing.

International Day of Prayer for Peace

On 21 September, churches and communities throughout the world are committing to the International Day of Peace through prayer, meditation and other forms of spiritual observance. This year the WCC is calling particularly on the participants of the International Ecumenical Peace Convocation to share prayers for peace with people within their own communities and beyond, including those they may have got to know through the peace convocation.

Being Church Together

A select group of church leaders from the Gulf region and the six main sending countries in Asia will meet in Bangkok, 17-20 July, to discern ways by which churches in the region can respond to the phenomena of increasing displacement, xenophobia and loss of dignity caused by political unrest in the region.

Afro-descendent minorities in Latin America

The first-ever gathering of churches and organizations of Afro-descendent minorities across Latin America will take place in the Nicaraguan capital Managua in June 2011.

Time for Creation

From 1 September - the first day of the Orthodox church year - to 4 October - the feast of Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and the environment, in the Catholic tradition - churches are called to become involved in the Time for Creation. As 2011 is the International Year of Forests, the WCC especially encourages prayers and celebrations around this theme.

World Sunday for Peace

As the sun rises on Sunday 22 May Christians and churches across the world are being encouraged by the World Council of Churches (WCC) to celebrate God’s peace in their worship services, to hold a Peace Sunday dawn vigil, to plant a tree as an act of peace or to use social media to share prayers for peace with Christians around the world.

Orthodox photo exhibit at Ecumenical Centre

A photo exhibition devoted to the life and faith of Orthodox Christian churches opens Monday 14 February at the Ecumenical Centre in Grand Saconnex, Geneva. The exhibit is presented by Orthphoto in partnership with the WCC.

International Ecumenical Peace Convocation
Kingston, Jamaica
The IEPC will encourage churches to reflect and promote peace and justice in their lives and in their theologies. Jesus' great commandment "Love your neighbour as yourself" is a guiding light for the gathering and its four main themes: "Peace in the Community", "Peace with the Earth", "Peace in the Marketplace" and "Peace among the Peoples".
