Laos and Brazil churches enter process for WCC membership
Towards the end of its meeting, two applications for admission into the WCC fellowship were received by the central committee according to new rules adopted at the WCC's 9th Assembly in Brazil. The two churches are the Lao Evangelical Church, and the Independent Presbyterian Church of Brazil.

A stimulating and accessible discussion of contemporary ecumenical challenges was offered to central committee members on Monday 4 September.

The continued financial stabilization of the Council was confirmed today as central committee approved its regular financial report and adopted a new budget for the WCC's reorganized programmatic activity.

Bishop Koppe honoured by WCC leader
Retiring German church leader Bishop Rolf Koppe was honoured by central committee today as he completes a career of ecumenical service which began in 1969.

Ecumenical Institute hosts central committee
Members of central committee were able to visit the WCC's Ecumenical Institute at Bossey, just outside Geneva, on Sunday 3 September, and to learn more about the work of this unique establishment.

Seven issues so far identified as requiring public actions by the 2006 Central Committee meeting are just trade, HIV and AIDS, situations in Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Lebanon, Kosovo, and the plight of children in conflicts, with a focus on northern Uganda.

Decisions to be taken early next week
After having spent Saturday and Sunday deliberating in smaller groups, central committee delegates will be required, as of Monday, to take a number of strategic decisions affecting the work of the WCC over the next seven years.
