Pay up at the tap: Pre-paid water meters put the poor at risk


In Lesotho, South Africa and many other African countries, devices that restrict consumers to only using water that they have paid for in advance are being promoted as a way to fund better water infrastructure. A problematic approach, church water experts warn, as it endangers the poorest of the poor's access to this indispensable necessity of life.

UN Human Rights Council creates independent expert on water and sanitation


(Geneva, 28.03.2008) Just one week after World Water Day, the UN Human Rights Council has highlighted and reacted to the human rights aspects of the water crisis. The Council unanimously adopted a resolution creating a 3-year mandate for an independent expert on water and sanitation. This decision will hopefully further advance the recognition and practical implementation of the human right to water.

The Swedish Archbishop handed over a petition with 20 000 signatures to the government and Cabinet Secretary Frank Belfrage demanding that Sweden clearly confirm water as a human right.

Christian agency warns of oil exploitation dangers in Sudan


Nairobi, 26 February (ENI)--A German Christian humanitarian agency, Sign of Hope, has warned of the consequences of oil exploitation in Sudan, citing possible contamination of surface and ground water by companies prospecting in the south of the country.

Dom Luiz Cappio in hunger strike in protest against the transposition of the São Francisco river


On November 27, the bishop of the diocese of Barra (state of Bahia), Dom Luiz Flávio Cappio, started to fast again in protest against the São Francisco river transposition project. In a letter sent to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, he stressed that he will only stop fasting when the projects are suspended.

Norwegian politicians balancing water for Blue October


Organizations around the world are contributing with activities to the international month of action "Blue October". In Norway, politicians took part in a race in which they had to balance containers of water on their head. The video of the event, though in Norwegian, speaks for itself.
