Congratulations to Indian Prime Minister Singh

"Warmest congratulations" were expressed by the World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia to the Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh, who has begun his second tenure in the post. In a 25 May letter to Singh, Kobia wrote: "Your return to power as Prime Minster, with a clear mandate, gives the people of India confidence that your much-valued assurances of India’s secular democratic principles will be upheld and that all people in your great nation – the poorest of the poor, and those who experience discrimination on the basis of caste or religion – will find protection and dignity".

Your Excellency,

It gives me immense pleasure to extend, on behalf of the World Council of Churches, our warmest congratulations and sincere greetings to Your Excellency, as you begin your second tenure as the Prime Minister of India.

By successfully completing a major exercise of popular voting in a vast country like yours, India has once again proved its commitment to strengthening democracy. Nothing improves the reputation of a government and its leader more than their returning to power with an increased majority.

Your Excellency, you have been providing leadership to the world's largest democracy in various capacities, especially during the past five years as the Prime Minister of India. I am sure that with your impeccable credentials you stand in a good position to lead the country on the road towards joining the community of developed nations in ensuring world peace and justice for all nations of the world.

During my meeting with you in October last year at your official residence, Your Excellency reaffirmed your determination to uphold the values of communal harmony, religious tolerance, and the values of freedom and pluralism that make India a unique model for us all. In fact, upon my return from India I conveyed your encouraging message to our constituencies all over the world. Your return to power as Prime Minster, with a clear mandate, gives the people of India confidence that your much-valued assurances of India's secular democratic principles will be upheld and that all peoples in your great nation – the poorest of the poor, and those who experience discrimination on the basis of caste or religion – will find protection and dignity.

I wish Your Excellency good health, your country prosperity and its people happiness. Please accept the assurances of my prayers and God's blessings upon you and your nation.

Yours sincerely,

Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia
WCC general secretary
