The Methodist Church of Nigeria (Diocese of Umuahia) Women’s Fellowship has invited Jessie Fubara-Manuel, an elder of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria who also collaborates with the World Council of Churches Ecumenical HIV and AIDS Initiatives and Advocacy (WCC-EHAIA), to deliver the keynote address at the opening of its 42nd conference.
Fubara-Manuel will speak on 24 August at the Methodist Theological Institute in Abia State. She will be reflecting on the conference theme “God’s Work, My Guide,” as well as on “Thursdays in Black,” a campaign that, through the simple gesture of wearing black on Thursdays, promotes an end to violence against women and girls.
Conference organizers said the annual conference offers women a time to reexamine their role in the church, assess their performance, and rekindle their spiritual passion.
“Thursdays in Black advocacy campaigns are indeed bearing fruits - I believe lasting fruits!” said Rev. Dr Nyambura Njoroge, WCC-EHAIA coordinator.
“Through inspired church leaders and individuals, our collective efforts are building solidarity and accompaniment among the entire WCC fellowship,” she said. “The Women’s Fellowship in Nigeria is setting a commendable example for fellowships of men, youth and children who can and are joining in preventing and responding to sexual and gender-based violence.”
