In a tribute issued from Geneva on 8 May, the World Council of Churches (WCC) has paid its respect and sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of the late Rev. Dr Somen Das, Rev. Dr Habil James Massey and Professor Ninan Koshy. The three noted ecumenists from India have died over a period of two months since early March 2015, concluding with the passing of Dr Das on 5 May.

Das, at one time principal of Bishop’s College, Kolkata, chaired the Student Christian Movement of India in the 1980s. Massey, also a renowned theologian and ecumenist, worked closely with a number of church councils and served the WCC as director of its Dalit solidarity programme under the auspices of the commission on Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation. Koshy, author of A History of the Ecumenical Movement in Asia, was a former director of the Commission of the Churches on International Affairs.
