WCC holds public event at World Water Week in Stockholm

25 August 2017

Organized as part of World Water Week in Stockholm, Sweden, the World Council of Churches (WCC) invites faith-based organizations, congregations and individuals to a 30 August public event entitled “Water and Faith: Building partnerships to achieve the SDGs”. The event is an open session, organized by the WCC in collaboration with Church of Sweden, Global Water Partnership, Stockholm International Water Institute, and Swedish Institute Alexandria.

Where: FH Cabaret room, City Conference Center, Folkets Hus, Barnhusgtan 12-14, Stockholm

When: 30 August 2017; 9.00 – 10.30

Who can attend: Anyone, particularly faith communities from Sweden. Registration not required.

”This event has been developed to inform and inspire faith-based organizations, congregations as well as individuals across Sweden and internationally,” explains Dinesh Suna, coordinator of the WCC-Ecumenical Water Network, “in particular those engaged in social and environmental challenges, both locally and globally.”

“Faith-based organizations and their vast and structured networks are a strong voice in guiding community values, beliefs and behaviors in many parts of the world,” Suna adds. “Particularly, in areas with the highest levels of water stress, religion often plays a definitive role in the daily lives of community members. Many are engaged in promoting sustainable water development, and we believe there is much to be gained from closer cooperation locally, regionally and globally.”

The event is the second consecutive Water and Faith session during the annual World Water Week, and will showcase a series of actual water projects led by faith-based organizations that operate in diverse geographical and social contexts around the world. An interactive format will serve to both exchange experiences and to advance cooperation and dialogue between faith-based organizations and the water community at large.

Among presenters are Rev. Adam Russell Taylor, lead for the Faith-Based Initiative, World Bank Group;  Dinesh Suna, coordinator, WCC-Ecumenical Water Network; Elizabeth Yaari, programme manager, Department of Transboundary Water Management, Stockholm International Water Institute; Rev. Henrik Grape, coordinator, WCC Working Group on Climate Change; Francois Brikke, senior network officer, Global Water Partnership; Peter Weiderud, director, Swedish Institute Alexandria; and Munqeth Mehyar, chairman and Jordanian director, EcoPeace Middle East.
