In a 14 April letter, World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit expressed the solidarity of the ecumenical fellowship with the people in Iceland, who have gathered in the streets in this last week to protest against a corrupt and unjust system of tax havens that primarily serves the already affluent and powerful
“I would like to commend the people - and churches - in Iceland who are demanding trustworthiness, transparency, and accountability in government and who are reminding government leaders that they should always bear in mind the interests of people who struggle to make a living for themselves and their families,” Tveit wrote.
The protesters are showing that there is tremendous power in peaceful demonstration, and that change is possible when we act together for a better world, he added.
