cf. WCC Press Update pu-02-13, of 8 may 2002

In a letter to the Protestant Federation of Haiti and member churches, Rev. Dr Konrad Raiser, general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), assured Christians in the country of his fraternal support and prayers. "We are convinced that the increasing suffering of the population makes it all the more necessary to have a dialogue among all the different parties to the conflict, in order for the living conditions of Haitians to be truly changed."

The letter comes as a response to a "message to the nation" on 7 August 2003, in which the Protestant Federation of Haiti asks, "Is Haiti left to impunity, gangsterism, devilry and criminality?"

The WCC calls on the Haitian government to apply the resolutions from the Organization of American States (OAS). An ecumenical delegation will visit Haiti next November.
