The World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit extended prayers and heartfelt congratulations to Bishop Angaelos of the Coptic Orthodox Church in the United Kingdom for receiving the honour of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services in promoting human rights and religious freedom.

“As a General Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church, you have not only played a leading role in promoting the role of young people in the society, but you have also contributed greatly to advocacy efforts for human rights and development in the UK and beyond,” said the WCC general secretary in a letter to Angaelos, issued on 25 June.

Coming from a WCC member church, Bishop Angaelos has been deeply engaged in promoting Christian unity and interfaith relations, as well as in his work as a member of the WCC Reference Group on Human Sexuality.

“We are specifically thankful for having you as a member of the Reference Group on Human Sexuality. The work of the reference group is essential to the ecumenical movement and to the member churches of the WCC as it promotes human rights and accompanies the churches on a Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace,” Tveit said.

“Your work is a reflection of the role of the churches in times of challenges and troubles bringing hope for change and acting for peaceful societies,” Tveit added.
