More than 300 theological educators from all major theological education institutions of South Africa and a number of theological institutions throughout Africa met in the Faculty of Theology, Stellenbosch University in South Africa from 22-26 June 2009 for the Joint Conference of Academic Societies in the Fields of Religion and Theology.

The Ecumenical Theological Education project of the World Council of Churches (ETE/WCC) cooperated with the Southern African Missiological Society (SAMS) to provide for some 40 lectures on key challenges and future prospects in African theological education.

With some 30 other academic societies present, 350 participants and more than 260 papers contributed the conference met on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Stellenbosch theological faculty.

Covering a wide-range of topics the SAMS and ETE/WCC presentations included ecumenical formation in theological education, the role of Theological Education by Extension (TEE) programmes and trans-cultural mission in theological education, the relation to Pentecostal and African Instituted Churches in theological education as well as African Diaspora Churches in Shaping the Future of African Christianity.

Key presentations from the conference will be published by the participating academic theological societies and in the area of theological education by Missionalia, the South African journal for missiology, in cooperation between SAMS and ETE/WCC.
