His Holiness Ignatius Mor Aphrem II, Patriarch of the Syriac Orthodox Church, arrived Sunday afternoon at the Conference on World Mission and Evangelism (CWME) being held in Arusha, Tanzania from 8-13 March.

Patriarch Mor Aphrem will be the keynote speaker at the plenary on 13 March, reflecting on the theme “Equipped Disciples: Embracing the Cross”. His keynote address will be titled “Embracing the Cross Today in the Context of the Middle East.”

Patriarch Mor Aphrem was welcomed by Archbishop Vicken Aykazian, World Council of Churches (WCC) deputy general secretary Prof. Dr Fr Ioan Sauca and the moderator of the WCC Commission on World Mission and Evangelism (CWME), Metropolitan Dr Mor Geevarghese Coorilos.

Sauca said: “It’s a great honour and we are very grateful to His Holiness for being present at the Conference on World Mission and Evangelism in Arusha.”

Sauca said that the plenary on 13 March “aims to provide the participants with essential missiological aspects of the theology of the cross and its focus on life-giving, hope, and resurrection, and also highlight the links between embracing the cross as equipped disciples and the call to transforming discipleship.”
