More than 30 young adults coming from different countries in Latin America and the Caribbean will gather in Colombia to reflect and plan actions on eco-justice and peace building.
“Young people for Eco-Justice and Peace: The challenge that we accept” will be organized by the World Student Christian Federation in Latin America and the Caribbean (WSCF – LAC), a partner of the World Council of Churches (WCC), in Barranquilla, from 15-18 August.
The participants, who come from student Christian movements from eight different countries, will be encouraged to reflect on the links between economies, ecology and peace building.
Athena Peralta, WCC’s programme executive for the Economy of Life, sees the gathering as an important part of ecumenical capacity building initiatives in the region.
“It is critical to hear the perspectives of young people on the nexus between eco-justice and peace building as they have a key role to play in responding to the immense challenges posed by climate change and in keeping peace within their communities”, said Peralta.
The programme includes workshops, Bible studies from a popular perspective and planning sessions of coordinated actions, in which the participants will develop small projects to be included in the framework of the WSCF’s regional agenda of eco-justice.
Open conferences will be co-organized with the Corporación Universitaria Reformada, which has a history in the processes of academic training and extension work in the field of peace building.
The organizers also highlight the participation of young leaders from communities that are part of the Colombian post-peace agreements transition. They will take part in panels and engage in dialogue with other youth from the region on experiences in the work for peace.
