Dr Samuel Kabue, executive secretary of the WCC’s Ecumenical Disability Advocates Network, an initiative of the World Council of Churches, was elected to  the Committee of Experts to the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of Person with Disabilities (CRPD).

Kabue was elected during the ninth session of the Conference of State Parties to the CRPD, held from 14 to 16 June 2016. He will serve as a committee member for a four-year term with a possibility of being re-elected. The group oversees implementation of the UN convention.

“Including persons with disabilities is not an option in society; it should be its defining characteristic. I will use my ecumenical experience in disability work to advocate for the protection and promotion of the human rights of persons with disabilities as well as their inclusion in development,” said Kabue.
